4 Songs We Are Singing in September

New songs for a new month. As usual I provide you with the lyrics and the tune for reference. I love a new month and adding new songs to our repertoire. Check out past months posts to see our past songs.

Do As I’m Doing

This is an easy song where children get to take turns being the leader. They can pick different actions and follow the prompts of the song. This can easily be adapted to any prompt and recently we have been using scarves.

Do as I’m doing
Follow follow me.
Do as I’m doing
Follow follow me.
I can do it high or low,
I can do it fast or slow,
Do as I’m doing
Follow follow me.
Do as I’m doing
Follow follow me.

*pick different movements and follow the words of the song.

Old Macdonald’s Farm

This is an all time favorite and I have not met a kid that does not like this song. This song is great for introducing animal noises to really young babies and toddlers. As my children get older we also use this song because the rhythm is a little challenging. We let each child be an animal and try to fill in their animal sound at the correct timing.

Old Macdonald had a farm,
EIEIO
And on that farm he had a dog,
EIEIO
With a woof woof here,
And a woof woof there,
Here a woof, there a woof,
Everywhere a woof woof.
Old Macdonald had a farm
EIEIO.

*insert different animals and sounds.
cat (meow)
cow (moo)
horse (neigh)
sheep (baa)
fish (glub)
duck (quack)

If You’re Holding a Red Scarf

tune: Mary’s Wearing a Red Dress

My children currently love this song. This is the most popular song we have been using with our rhythm scarves. We love to identify the colors and take turns standing up and waving our scarves. For more scarf activities go to this post!

If you’re holding a red scarf red scarf red scarf
If you’re holding a red scarf please stand up!

Wave wave wave your scarf, wave your scarf, wave your scarf,
Wave wave wave your scarf, now sit down.

*insert with other colors of scarves you have besides red.

Here are the super inexpensive scarves that I use!

Mary Will You Stand Up

This song is great for the beginnings of new school year. It is excellent in a new classroom, preschool, or music time group. This song allows children to hear their name and take turns standing up and being in the spotlight. For more songs that say each child’s individual names go to this post!

Mary, will you stand up and let us see your smile,
We’re glad your here today, won’t you stay awhile.
*(insert different names into ‘Mary’)

Good luck singing this month. For more monthly songs and ideas check out my most recent months below. Be excited for Halloween and Fall songs coming up!
