5 Camping Songs For Kids

My family just recently went camping. I love to take my kids camping and made a goal a couple of years back that I would at least go camping once a year no matter my situation. Camping with toddlers, babies, and pregnancy is hard. However, my kids love to be outdoors and sleep in a tent. This year we braved a good amount of rain in the morning, but the food and company was excellent.

I decided to put together a few camping songs together to sing with your children. These work as songs around a campfire or even songs as you are packing and anticipating the trip. I included a few songs that would be for older toddlers and preschoolers as well as shorter and simpler songs for babies and small toddlers.

Hope you enjoy the songs, and even if you aren’t the family that wants to brave the outdoors, why not roast hotdogs and marshmallows one night, or even set up a tent in the backyard or living room. Your kids will still probably count any adventure as camping.

5 Children’s Camping Songs

Going On A Bear Hunt

There are so many versions of this song and as usual I will share the version we sing. You can find an endless amount of verses. I only use four for my little ones and their short attention spans. However, my 3.5 year old cannot get enough of this song. Stories within songs are winners in a preschooler’s book.

Chorus:
Going on a bear hunt (kids repeat)
Gonna catch a big one (kids repeat)
I’m not afraid (kids repeat)
What a beautiful day (kids repeat)

Uh oh!
Tall Grass!
We can’t go over it (kids repeat)
We can’t go under it (kids repeat)
We have to go through it!
Swish Swish Swish Swish. (Move arms like you are trekking through tall grass)

Chorus

Uh oh!
A deep river!
We can’t go over it (kids repeat)
We can’t go under it (kids repeat)
We have to go through it!
Swim swim swim swim. (Move arms like you are swimming)

Chorus

Uh oh!
Mud!
We can’t go over it (kids repeat)
We can’t go under it (kids repeat)
We have to go through it!
Squelch squelch squelch squelch. (Move legs like you are trudging through mud)

Chorus

Uh oh!
A dark cave!
We can’t go over it (kids repeat)
We can’t go under it (kids repeat)
We have to go through it!
Tiptoe tiptoe tiptoe tiptoe. (Tiptoe through pretend cave)

What’s That!
One shiny wet nose!
Two big furry ears!
Two big green eyes!
It’s a BEAR!

Quick!
Back through the cave!
Tiptoe Tiptoe Tiptoe!
Back through the mud!
Squelch squelch squelch!
Back through the river!
Swim swim swim!
Back through the grass!
Swish swish swish!
Open the door!
Up the stairs!
Oh no!!!!

If You’re Happy and You Know It

This is a very familiar song, but a winner for young toddlers to sing around the campfire.

If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands. (clap hands)
If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands. (clap hands)
If you’re happy and your know it than your face will surely show it. (use fingers to show smile)
If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands. (clap hands)

If you’re happy and you know it stomp your feet.
If you’re happy and you know it stomp your feet.
If you’re happy and your know it than your face will surely show it.
If you’re happy and you know it stomp your feet.

If you’re happy and you know it shout hurray!
If you’re happy and you know it shout hurray!.
If you’re happy and your know it than your face will surely show it.
If you’re happy and you know it shout hurray!

If you’re happy and you know it do all three. (do all movements starting with clap)
If you’re happy and you know it do all three. (do all movements starting with clap)
If you’re happy and your know it than your face will surely show it.
If you’re happy and you know it do all three. (do all movements starting with clap)

A Hunting We Will Go
By: Thomas Arne

This song is all about rhyming!

Oh a hunting we will go
A hunting we will go
We’ll catch a fox and put him in a box
And then we’ll let him go.

Oh a hunting we will go
A hunting we will go
We’ll catch a star and put it in a car
And then we’ll let it go.

Oh a hunting we will go
A hunting we will go
We’ll catch a fish and put him in a dish
And then we’ll let him go.

Oh a hunting we will go
A hunting we will go
We’ll catch a dragon and put him in a wagon
And then we’ll let him go.

Oh a hunting we will go
A hunting we will go
We’ll catch a whale and put him in a pail
And then we’ll let him go.

Oh a hunting we will go
A hunting we will go
We’ll catch a bear and put him in a chair
And then we’ll let him go.

We’re Going on a “Camp out”
Adapted from Raffi

Raffi has a familiar song about going on a picnic. We decided to use camp out and Madison and I had a great time listing what things to bring on our camp out. You can always insert your own items.

Going on a picnic,  leaving right away
If it doesn’t rain, we’ll stay all day.
Did you bring the tent?
Yes I brought the tent.
Did you bring the flashlight?
Yes I brought the flashlight.
Did you bring the sleeping bags?
Yes I brought the sleeping bags.
Ready for a camp out out, here we go!

Going on a picnic,  leaving right away
If it doesn’t rain, we’ll stay all day.
Did you bring the firewood?
Yes I brought the firewood.
Did you bring the marshmallows?
Yes I brought the marshmallows.
Did you bring the roasting sticks?
Yes I brought the roasting sticks.
Ready for a camp out out, here we go!

A Boom Chicka Boom
By: Johnny Cash

Classic campfire song! Easy, silly and the kids repeat after you. Add as many verses as you would like.

I said a boom chicka boom (kids repeat)
I said a boom chicka boom (kids repeat)
I said a boom chicka locka chicka rocka chicka boom (kids repeat)
Uh huh! (repeat)
Oh yeah! (repeat)
Next time…. faster!

Sing the same words again, but faster. You can also add slower, higher, lower, under water, like a baby, etc.

I have embedded the Youtube video here! Video taping kids is super fun and unpredictable.
